"I'm so proud of our fabulous NHS staff in West Oxfordshire and all the volunteers who have helped this happen. Everyone that gets the vaccine is not only helping themselves, but helping their neighbours. When you get contacted for your vaccine, do take it up! Well done Witney - excellent work."

Thoughts of the Week

My Birding Dilema

by Dianne Parkes
At the start of lockdown I started feeding 2 young robins on worms/grubs in the garden.

They soon became so tame they ‘demanded’ more food, flying into the kitchen, eating biscuit crumbs from the dog bowl and sitting on the kitchen beam chirping for more! I’ve been feeding them (outside!) all winter but a bit concerned about leaving the kitchen door open. I do hope they have forgotten their fledgling habits!!

Witney Birdwatch
A recent Facebook poll of Witney Garden Birds

Bird Crazy

The Other day in Sainsbury’s I went to by some bird seed and the shelf was nearly bare. ‘You can blame that woman on I Love Witney’ a customer said ‘she’s got us all bird crazy’.  Well Done Dianne

Getting to Know your Birds better

A recent poll of Witney Garden Birds included, in descending order : Wood Pigeon, Blackbird, Robin, Blue Tit, House Sparrow, Starling, Magpie, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Wren, Dove, Dunnock, Crow, Long Tailed Tit, Chaffinch, Western Jackdaw, Wagtail, Turtle Doves, Bullfinch, Raven, Nuthatch, Cole Tit, Barn Owl, House Martin, Siskin.

Some people did include The Red Kite and the Sparrowhawk but we didn’t really think these were garden birds.

(Based upon our experience of polls, I do hope the Crow won’t be threatening the Wood Pigeon with Legal Action !!!)

How long do you think it took for the person to come up with the name - Blackbird ?
Just Asking

For centuries town criers have been entrusted with announcing anything from royal proclamations to local news-even wife selling in the 18th century!

Jean Postlethwaite Dixon talks about being Witney’s Town Crier.

WHERE YOU GET YOUR LOCAL NEWS

We are very pleased with the response to the Facebook Poll on where lovely Witney locals get their news.

With over 370 responses, it’s been a massive success for ‘I Love Witney’ our votes alone were higher than the total combined score of all of the others put together ! YIPPEE !!

Interestingly, rather than consider how to improve their enjoyability or increase their actual readership, we’ve already been threatened with litigation which I find very surprising and rather sad in a way.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING PART IN THE FACEBOOK POLL
